Pa. isn’t a great state for happiness or mental health, report says

Patriot-News - 3/19/2024

One’s surroundings can greatly affect their state of mind (think people who experience that dark season in Alaska).

According to a study, Pennsylvania isn’t exactly the best for mental health or happiness, either.

Soliant — which, as described by its about page, is “one of the nation’s largest healthcare staffing companies” which seeks to “[pair] talented caregivers with the best hospitals and healthcare providers” — published a study concerning the best states for both happiness and mental health in the United States.

These states were found after each of the 50 were graded across eight categories related to mental health. Among these categories were “Suicide Rate of 15-24 Age Group,” “Unemployment Rate,” and “Access to Exercise Opportunities,” as well as others.

Pennsylvania, unfortunately, didn’t break the top 10, and scored only within the 60 to 69 grading range out of a total possible score of 100.

The Keystone State’s state of wellbeing isn’t exactly new news: PennLive has reported on other reports covering the state’s happiness (or lack thereof), with even some of its cities ranking among the nation’s “unhappiest” environments.

The top three states which were the absolute best for mental health and happiness were the following in ascending order: Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Nebraska.

“Nebraska has the lowest level of teenagers and young adults (ages 16-24) who are not working nor in school of all 50 states, at 4.28%,” the report elaborates.

“Nebraska also emerged in the tp five states for having the lowest number of bad mental health days and the lowest unemployment rate.”
