Warbirds Provide Flyover for 100th Birthday of D-Day Veteran in Chehalis

The Chronicle - 7/16/2022

Jul. 14—Cascade Warbirds members today flew their aircraft in a special formation in a salute to D-Day Veteran Robert "Bob" Kabel on his 100th birthday celebration.

The flyover passed above Chehalis West Assisted Living Center, where Kabel and other veterans reside, at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

"It was such a special day today at Chehalis West!" the center wrote on Facebook. "We got to celebrate Bob's 100th birthday! King 5 News made a appearance and we got to watch the planes go by! We had such a great day filled with music, smiles and good memories! Happy birthday Bob!"

"We are pleased to have so many of our members volunteer in this salute, as a big part of our mission is to honor veterans, and especially one like Bob who participated in the largest amphibious invasion in history," said Squadron Commander John "Smokey" Johnson prior to the flight.

Cascade Warbirds is Squadron #2 of EAA Warbirds of America and is a nonprofit organization of local aviation enthusiasts, many of whom are pilot-owners of historic military aircraft.

With over 230 members and the largest squadron in Warbirds of America, Cascade Warbirds is based in the Puget Sound area. Members meet at the Museum of Flight in Seattle from October until flying weather returns in April with a mission to promote and encourage the flying preservation and display of Warbird aircraft, while honoring Veterans and engaging in aviation education.
