Chelmsford cookout helps veterans in hospice

Wicked Local Northwest - 7/26/2021

Jul. 27—CHELMSFORD — Rock music filled the air Saturday, along with the tang of barbecued fare, as veterans and their families and friends queued up for good food, good company, and a good cause.

The first annual Military and Veterans Appreciation Pig Roast, sponsored by Mindy's Mission, drew a gathering of about 350 to the Chelmsford Elks July 24.

The event raised funds for goods for hospice patients of the Bedford Veterans Administration Hospital.

Among those who came were David Brandano of Wilmington, and his son, Zachary. Father and son sat in folding chairs in the shade.

"We came to support Melinda," Brandano said of organizer Melinda Westberry. "It's good just to enjoy the food, at a good price."

Veteran Jamielee Sims, and Don Piatti, of New Hampshire, attended after leaning about the event on Facebook.

Sims served in the Navy 12 years, including aboard a destroyer in the Middle East.

Sims said she is glad for an event raising awareness of issues facing veterans. "It's extremely important. It doesn't get enough attention," Sims said.

Westberry, cofounder of Mindy's Mission, reflected on the event's turnout, and success.

"We were able to bring in over $7,500, and that is a huge amount," Westberry said. "I've had many fundraisers over the years, and I think that was the biggest fundraising we've done so far."

The funds will purchase supplies for hospice patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital, including sweatpants, blankets, and personal items. "They are just in their johnnies without a lot of supplies," Westberry said.

Mindy's Mission raises awareness of nonprofits and charities, with a focus on veterans' needs. "There are a lot of different groups we like to help. A lot of people reach out to me," Westberry said.

The Rock It Military Fundraiser is set for Aug. 28 at the H.E. Fletcher Social & Athletic Club in Westford.

"It's live music, raffles, and food. You have to bring items for overseas CARE packages," Westberry said. "A lot of people with children and grandchildren have things they can't get. We send boxes...they can distribute among themselves."
