Feds pick site for long-awaited Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic in South Hampton Roads

Daily Press - 6/29/2021

A long-awaited Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic for South Hampton Roads is on the way now that federal property managers have picked a site for it, Sen. Mark Warner announced Tuesday.

The 196,000 square foot clinic will be on a 25-acre site by the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center campus on Battlefield Boulevard, Chesapeake, Warner said.

Warner has been pushing the General Services Administration to sign a lease for this facility, as well as 17 others in 11 other states since 2016.

“This new outpatient facility is long-overdue in a region with one of the fastest-growing veterans populations in the country, and where veterans often battle traffic and long wait times to access the care they’ve earned,” Warner said.

He said the need is particularly urgent in Hampton Roads, where the number of VA health benefits enrollees is expected to increase by 44% over the next 20 years, with an increase in VA’s outpatient workload likely to increase by more than 70 percent.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022, and the facility is set to open in the fall of 2024, according to the GSA.

The facility will provide primary care, mental health and eye clinic services, as well as new specialty care and advanced imaging services. It will have more than 1,000 parking spaces.

“It will greatly improve access to care for veterans and we look forward to extending our world class quality care to America’s heroes in this new location. In addition, the center will decrease veterans drive times, thereby improving their overall satisfaction,” said Dr. Taquisa K. Simmons, the executive director of the Hampton VA Healthcare System.

The Hampton VA system is seeing some of the fastest growing demand for services in the country and serves a population of 300,000 in eastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.

PH LLC, doing business as The Molasky Group of Companies, will be the developer for the Chesapeake outpatient clinic lease.
