Generals Bridge dedication postponed, mayor seeks information on Quincy's living veterans

The Patriot Ledger - 3/3/2021

QUINCY — The long-awaited dedication of a new bridge downtown has been moved from May to Saturday, Sept. 11.

The Generals Bridge will ultimately span the MBTA tracks to connect Burgin Parkway with Parkingway by extending Cliveden Street through the site of the former Ross garage. Construction on the $10 million project started in 2019.

Mayor Thomas Koch said uncertainty around coronavirus-related gathering restrictions forced the move of the dedication. The bridge will ultimately honor seven generals from Quincy from the Army, Air Force, National Guard and Marines. There are three 4-star generals, three 2-star generals and one 1-star general from Quincy.

Gen. James McConville, chief of staff of the Army; retired Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs; and retired Army Gen. Gordon Sullivan, former chief of staff of the Army, will be honored with statues. Busts will be dedicated to Major Gen. Francis McGinn of the National Guard; retired Air Force brigadier general Ronald Rand; Air Force Major Gen. Stephen Keefe; and Massachusetts Air National Guard Major Gen. Charles Sweeney.

The major has also floated the idea of renaming several nearby streets in honor of the generals.

In addition to the seven generals, the mayor will also recognize the city's living veterans and those currently serving in a program at the dedication. Those who wish to be honored or their families can send information to mmulvey@quincyma.gov or call 617-376-1990 to submit name, rank, branch of service and years served.

Once complete, the bridge will run one lane of traffic in either direction. Traffic will only be able to turn right going on and off of the road at Burgin Parkway, so the main purpose of the new construction will be to give drivers coming from the highway and southern parts of Quincy an easier way to get to downtown.
