Veterans to be honored at Logansport High School

Pharos-Tribune - 10/28/2020

Oct. 28--If there is one event that Logansport High School would host -- no matter what -- it would be to honor the veterans.

"They need to be recognized," Cheryl Reiff simply said.

With so many events throughout the community being canceled due to pandemic concerns, Reiff, chairperson of the Veterans Day Committee, said students, faculty and staff tossed around various ideas. And absolutely no one thought abandoning the annual program was the right choice.

So, at 1 p.m.Nov. 11, local veterans will be recognized during a program that will be held in the Berry Bowl. Veterans are asked to contact Reiff by Nov. 10 by calling 574-753-0441, ext. 27222, or sending an e-mail to reiffcm@lcsc.k12.in.us with personal information, including name, rank, branch of military, years of service, military job and war information, if served in a war.

Veterans are asked to arrive by 12:30 p.m. to check-in on the day of the event.

Social distancing must be followed and masks are required.

While Reiff said it's not uncommon for some people to dislike masks, she reminds everyone that the event will be held inside a school setting, and that means they are required.

Due to social distancing, only the senior class members will be able to attend the program. All other students will watch via a live feed in their classrooms.

"We're the only one who could hold an event because the Berry Bowl has enough space," she said of the high school.

And since the senior class seems to be the ones who lose out, especially during last school year's shutdown, Reiff said it was only fitting that they be the students who could attend.

The symphonic band and combined choirs will perform. Guest speaker will be former Logansport High School graduate, Sgt. Ryan Schrock. Student Council president, Carter Harris, and senior class president, Michael Karnafel will be in charge of the day's activities.

Reiff said that instead of using the bleachers for the guests, chairs will be set up on the floor in order to maintain six feet between each person. Senior class members will be in the upper north bleachers.

Each veteran will be individually recognized. High school students who are planning to enter the service will be honored as well.

Reiff said she hopes it will be a special day for everyone involved, but especially for those who have served this nation. Recognizing veterans for "their unselfish service and devotion to our country," she said, is one of the best things the school can do.
