"We need to continue to combat the opioid crisis," he said during a post-election victory celebration with supporters at the Mad Hatter Café, Tuesday.

O'Connor also said he will strive to improve the quality of education in the schools and a strengthen the South Shore economy during the next two years.

O'Connor received 41,711 votes from Plymouth-Norfolk District voters in a three-way battle for re-election that involved Democrat Dr. Katie McBrine, a Scituate pediatrician who lives in Hingham, and Independent candidate Stephen Gill, a Navy veteran attorney from Marshfield.

McBrine received 36,068 votes in her bid to unseat O'Connor and Gill received 4,164 ballots.

Weymouth voters gave O'Connor 13,649 ballots, McBrine 9,446 votes, and Gill 864 votes.

The Plymouth-Norfolk District includes; Weymouth, Scituate, Marshfield, Hingham, Hull, Cohasset, Norwell and Duxbury.

O'Connor said the high voter turnout in Weymouth, and throughout Massachusetts was great for the democratic process.

"I'm proud of the turnout," he said. "We brought together a group of people that included Republicans, Democrats, and Independents."

Councilor-at-large Michael Molisse said it is great to have a Weymouth resident serving in the state Senate.

"I have supported Patrick O'Connor from the beginning," he said. "He is such an asset to our town, and the whole South Shore. He has a proven record. We can't do any better than having Patrick O'Connor."

Molisse said O'Connor's parents Michael and Terry O'Connor greatly helped their son's reelection campaign and with raising him to be a fine young man.

"Mike coached Patrick when he played in Little League," he said.

Terry O'Connor said O'Connor developed an interest in politics as a child when he accompanied her to the polls during various elections.

"Patrick was always very inquisitive," she said. "He would say I don't understand the (political) parties, and why do people have to vote for a Republican or Democrat,"

Terry O'Connor said she has been delighted to have many people tell her how O'Connor has helped them with various needs over the years.

"He has always been a good boy," she said.

O'Connor said he is looking forward to taking steps to grow the economy across the South Shore and the state during the next two years.

"We need to do what is necessary," he said. "We need to deliver the resources to the South Shore like local state aid. Being able to help people has been at the forefront since I have been in office. At the state level we try to present solutions to people's problems. It is an honor and privilege for me and I can't thank the voters enough for giving me another two years."
