Comedy for a Cause set

The fifth annual Comedy for a Cause fundraiser will take place on Sept. 15 at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center, 75 Taylor St., Punta Gorda. VIP dinner and show table seating tickets are $75 with a 6 p.m. entrance, and show-only tickets are $25 with a 7:15 p.m. entrance. Both are available from any of the performers, at the Charlotte Players website, www.charlotteplayers.org or at www.comedy4acause.net. Click on your favorite performer to purchase your ticket. Board workshop scheduled

The Charlotte County Commission will hold a board workshop at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, in Room B-106 of the Charlotte County Administration Center, 18500 Murdock Circle, Port Charlotte. Topics include economic development director comments and sign code ordinance; and commissioners, administrator, and county attorney comments. The public is invited to attend but there will be no public input.

Writer’s tea planned

Car wash

Special Olympics Florida, Charlotte County, will hold a fundraising car wash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Taco Bell at 1710 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte. A minimum donation of $5 is requested. All proceeds will be used to support Special Olympics athletes in Charlotte County. Open Mic at Comedy Diner

The public is welcome to take the stage at the second Open Mic Night at the Langdon Playhouse Comedy Diner, 1182 Market Circle, Port Charlotte today. Musicians, singers, actors, dancers, writers, poets, comedians, magicians, acrobats, jugglers, sword swallowers – all are invited to come out and share their talents before a live audience.

Sign-ups begin a 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. There’s no charge for audience members and participants. Beer, wine, soft drinks, water and snacks will be available for purchase.

Fill-A-Backpack

The NAACP Branch 5093 will host its ninth annual Fill-A-Backpack event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 22 at Bayshore Live Oak Park, 23157 Bayshore Road, Port Charlotte. Ages from Baker Center through grade 12. Parents must be present with children in order to receive backpacks. All backpacks are first-come, first-serve bases. Board meeting scheduled

Crossroads Hope Academy Board of Directors will hold its monthly board meeting at noon on Tuesday in the back room, second floor, of Laishley Crab House, 150 Laishley Court, Punta Gorda. The meeting is open to the public.

Ribbon cutting scheduled

Charlotte County commissioners and Sheriff William Prummell will commemorate the opening of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office District 1 headquarters with a ribbon-cutting, open house and job fair at 8:30 a.m. on June 24. The facility, located on 11051 Willmington Blvd., Englewood, was funded by the voter-approved 1-percent local option sales tax.

The public is invited to attend. Following the ribbon-cutting, the headquarters will be open for guided tours for the public and media. CCSO staff also will be available to answer questions about job opportunities with the sheriff’s office.

School supplies registration set

The Salvation Army of Charlotte County will be holding back-to-school registration for school supplies from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from now through June 29 at 2120 Loveland Blvd., Port Charlotte. On June 23, registration will be held from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. They will also hold registration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 26 at 3325 Access Road, Englewood. Golf tournament to benefit Cultural Center

Cultural Center Charity Golf Tournament will be held with check-in and breakfast at 7 a.m. on June 24 at Riverwood Golf Club, 4100 Riverwood Drive, Port Charlotte. This four-person scramble will offer prizes for the first place team along with raffles. Cost is $65 per person and includes green fees, cart fees, breakfast, luncheon, two beverage tickets and certificate for reduced rate on future round of golf. Americas Boating Course offered

Peace River Sail and Power Squadron will present “America’s Boating Course” a Three-Day Safe Boating Course, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on July 8 (classes will also be on July 15 and 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day) at the Punta Gorda Boat Club, 802 Retta Esplanade, Punta Gorda (just west of Gilchrist Park).

The three sessions will cover boating law, safety equipment, safe boating practices, navigation, boating emergencies, personal watercraft, charts, GPS, trailering, and much more. Attendees will receive the America’s Boating Course manual, and after passing an exam, a completion certificate. The class is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for the Florida Boater Safety Education ID Card, required for anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, who operates a motorboat with 10 horsepower or more in Florida waters. The course is also approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Shoes for Kids

Charlotte State Bank & Trust is once again among local businesses joining the Sunrise Kiwanis annual Shoes for Kids drive and serving as collection points for new sneakers to be distributed to Charlotte County students in need.

Collection boxes will be on display in the lobbies at three bank offices:

• Murdock, 1100 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte;

Punta Gorda, 2331 Tamiami Trail, Punta Gorda;

Charlotte Harbor, 23112 Harborview Road, Charlotte Harbor

Shoes will be accepted at any Charlotte State Bank & Trust office during banking hours. Lobbies at all branches are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The shoe drive is scheduled to end on July 23. Monetary donations may be made at the bank offices or by mail to the Sunrise Kiwanis of Port Charlotte, 1489 Market Circle, Unit 308, Port Charlotte, FL 33953. Hurricane Preparedness for Pets

The Animal Welfare League is hosting a “Hurricane Preparedness for Pets” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday in the conference room of the shelter at 3519 Drance St., Port Charlotte. Join for valuable information on preparing your pet’s disaster kit. Also available will be pet photos of your pet/pets that should always be included in your kit. Cost is $15 for photo and a CD. Charlotte County wants you to Show Us Your Charlotte. Send us your favorite photos of Charlotte County — its beaches, parks, waterways, preserves or people — and the best 15 shots will be featured in the 2018 Show Us Your Charlotte Calendar.

It’s free and easy to enter. Simply visit www.showusyourcharlotte.com and upload your photos, along with information about you and your subject. Winners will receive a free calendar and have their photos featured on the county’s website and social media pages. You can enter as many photos as you would like, but only one will be eligible to appear in the calendar.

Winners will be notified by phone or email. Calendars will be available to the public in late November at county facilities to be announced.

Qualifying time announced

Noon on Monday is the first day candidates can qualify for the Nov. 7 City Election for the purpose of electing two councilmembers, one each from District 3 and District 5. Qualifying ends at noon on June 23. Councilmembers serve a two-year term. Candidate packets are now available through the City Clerk’s Office, City Hall, 326 W. Marion Ave. and at www.pgorda.us.
